Vacation in the Ortler Region in the Stelvio National Park

Nature at its most authentic

Discover One of the Most Beautiful Landscapes in Europe

The Stelvio National Park, covering more than 130,000 hectares across four Italian provinces, forms the stunning natural backdrop in which the Hotel Madatsch is nestled. From 650 meters in the valley floor near Latsch to over 3,900 meters at the summit of Ortler, hikers, bikers, and climbers can experience an incredibly diverse landscape, flora, and fauna. The main road connection in the park, the pass road over the Stelvio Pass (2,757 m), connects South Tyrol and Lombardy. This is a paradise for road bikers and motorcyclists.

National Park Visitor Centers

Five National Park visitor centers in South Tyrol invite you to learn more about this wonderful landscape. Each center is dedicated to a different theme, such as flora, fauna, history, or geology:

  • naturatrafoi in Trafoi: The exhibition here provides fascinating insights into the geology of the Ortler group, as well as the wildlife and plant life in the high-alpine region above the tree line. The extreme conditions have led to the development of amazing survival strategies.

  • aquaprad in Prad am Stilfserjoch: Here, visitors can learn about the importance of water in the national park. Aquariums display almost the entire fish fauna of South Tyrol, found in streams, rivers, lakes, moors, and ponds, along with amphibians and reptiles.

  • culturamartell in Martell Valley: Learn about the world of mountain farmers, both past and present. The people who live and work in the Stelvio National Park have always done so in close harmony with nature. culturamartell is a modern local culture museum focused on history.

  • avimundus in Schlanders: This center is dedicated to the birdlife of the Stelvio National Park and the Alpine region. As a visitor, you will learn about the different habitats of various species, their breeding and rearing, as well as their calls and songs.

  • lahnersäge in St. Gertraud in Ulten: The permanent exhibition is dedicated to the importance of forests and wood for humans. The restored Venetian sawmill allows you to trace the process from log to board. There is also an old mill to visit, where grain is still ground in the traditional way.
