The Journey is the Destination

On Foot in the Mountains

Elevation Gains at Your Own Pace from Trafoi to Ortler

The most authentic and enjoyable way to experience the mountains is on foot. During your hiking holiday in South Tyrol at the Madatsch, all you need to do is put on your hiking boots and open the door – you'll already be surrounded by our stunning mountain backdrop. You decide where to go and how far you want to venture. Beautiful forest roads and charming paths lead you from shady forests up to blooming meadows, across impressive rock formations, and further on to the snow and ice of the glacier region, which remains intact even in summer. The mountain huts provide hikers the chance to rest, where delicious local dishes are served, and both young and old can enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. And back at the hotel? Put your feet up and relax in our new wellness area.

"As a hiking guide, I not only accompany you over paths and peaks, but to moments that last - where the silence speaks, the nature touches, and a simple walk becomes a real memory."

Finding the Right Tour

From Hotel Madatsch, you can head straight out on easy and family-friendly hikes to sunny alpine pastures such as Prader Alm, Stilfser Alm, or Tartscher Alm. At the mountain huts, like Berglhütte or Payerhütte, you can treat yourself to some culinary delights after your workout. Or you can take the chairlift up to Furkelhütte. Here, at 2,250 m, you’ll enjoy a dreamlike view of the stunning mountain scenery of the Alps from the sun terrace. If you wish, you can leave the meadows behind and continue climbing up to rugged rocks and eternal ice, where challenging high-altitude hikes await.
For more tour tips, we’ll be happy to provide them on-site! The best tips come directly from the senior owner, who has guided guests through the mountains for many years.

Our Hiking Tips

Theme Trails in Stilfs

In the Stelvio National Park, families and curious individuals discover exciting themed trails, which reveal interesting details about the surroundings and present various topics in a fascinating way. You can admire wooden sculptures on the “Wurzelweg” trail, discover the small wonders of nature on the NATURAronda, and learn everything about the local forest animals on the “Gumperle” trail.

Venosta Valley High Mountain Trail

The Venosta Valley High Mountain Trail is a total of 108 kilometers long and leads from Staben to the Passo Resia - diagonally across the varied holiday region. Different sections are suitable for a day trip into the beautiful nature. The path mainly runs on the sunny side of the Vinschgau and partly leads along the famous irrigation channels.

Irrigation Trails in Vinschgau

Just outside the Stelvio National Park are the Vinschgau “Waalwege”. These mostly flat paths were laid centuries ago along the so-called "Waale" - canals used to irrigate the fields. The most popular Waalwege in the area include those around the Malles Heath, Glorenza and Sluderno.

Up to 3,000 metres

When hiking in Stelvio National Park, a high altitude tour is a must. We recommend experienced hikers who want to go high to take a tour with a guide and to definitely inform themselves about the current weather conditions and study the weather forecasts - healthy caution is therefore advised. On Ortler, Hintere Schöntaufspitze, Suldenspitze and the like, you will be rewarded for your efforts with fantastic panoramic views.
